Everyone is aware of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean, especially since it’s a long series that seems to never go away. On this day, July 7th, in 2006, the Pirates of the Caribbean cast celebrated the opening of the second movie in the series in theatres. Starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, the movie was titled “Dead Man’s Chest” and was a part of a Disney franchise that saw a huge amount of success, especially outside of the screen. They ended up making several billion dollars off the franchise, which included video games, books and theme park rides worldwide.

Three years prior to the release of this movie, the first one in this series was premiered at Disneyland on June 28, 2003. Although it wasn’t expected to do as good as it did, it actually ended up becoming a hit at the box-office, as well as receiving 5 nominations for Academy Awards. One of those was given to Johnny Depp for Best Actor.

For those of you who have never heard of the movie series, it was the first Disney film to be rated PG-13. People began to fall in love with the adventures that surrounded Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, and Will Turner, played by Orlando Bloom. Together, the two rescue Elizabeth Swann, played by Knightley, after being kidnapped by Captain Barbossa aboard The Black Pearl. Turner would fall in love with Swann and create an awkward dialogue between Sparrow and Turner throughout the movie.

With the same three major actors and the same director, the second film in the series was just as good as the first one. It saw enormous amounts of success at the box-office, especially after making a name for themselves with Curse of the Black Pearl. This time, it was only nominated for four Academy Awards, which included winning an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

Not long after filming the second movie in the series, they went to work on the third film, At World’s End. Shot back-to-back, the third movie in this series was released in 2007, shortly after the second one opened. It was a much bigger success than the other two, being named as on eof the top-grossing films of that year. It also won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, much like Dead Man’s Chest did.

Johnny Depp continues to prove that he can not only play any role given to him, but also that when he plays that role, it will turn any movie into a box hit. Apart from the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Depp made a name for himself with his roles in Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and Charlie and the Factory. Each of these movies portrayed a different side to Johnny Depp’s acting career and his role in Pirates of the Caribbean only gave us another side to that.

To this day, there are a total of four films in the PotC series. They have released information regarding the fifth one to the series, which plans to see a May 26, 2017 release date.
